In a remarkable Saturday game, Jaylen Wells scored a career-equivalent 27 points to lead No. 19 Washington State to a 77-65 win over UCLA, tying the school’s record for conference victories.
The triumph marks a momentous occasion for the Cougars (23-7, 14-5), who not only secured their 23rd win, matching a peak not seen since 2007, but also equaled the school’s record of 14 conference victories in a single season. They currently trail just behind Arizona for the top spot in the Pac-12 race, with a chance to claim the title depending on Arizona’s upcoming games.
A flagrant-2 foul situation, which resulted in UCLA guard Will McClendon’s ejection, incensed Bruins coach Mick Cronin, and spurred heightened energy in Beasley Coliseum. After the contentious call and ejection at the 7:23 mark in the second half, the Cougars, with the help of Wells, launched an 8-0 run, eventually ending the game on a dominating 22-7 run.
Myles Rice contributed 18 points for Washington State, which sits at its highest AP Top 25 rank since February 2008. Wells, the 6-foot-8 junior, was flawless from the free-throw line, going 10 for 10, which complements his 27-point performance against No. 4 Arizona earlier in February.
Leading UCLA (14-15, 9-9), Dylan Andrews scored 21 points, while Lazar Stefanovic added 11 points alongside eight rebounds. Although UCLA managed to wipe out a halftime deficit and lead in the second half, they faltered, making only two field goals in the final nine minutes.
The Cougars, despite a shaky offensive start at home, rallied strongly to outscore UCLA 34-13 closing the first half.

Washington State demonstrated resilience. Even though they have been stumbling offensively and showing inconsistency at the free-throw line, with Jones shooting 3 of 8, they came through when it mattered most.
