Video Surfaces of Minneapolis Cops Using Paintballs to Enforce Tim Walz's Curfew During 2020 Protests

A disturbing video from May 30, 2020, has emerged showing Minneapolis police officers using paintball guns to enforce a curfew order issued by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. The footage, captured by resident Tanya Kersson, depicts officers targeting residents who were merely standing on their porches or doorsteps during the curfew imposed in response to the George Floyd protests.

In the video, a tan Humvee is seen patrolling a quiet street in the Whittier neighborhood, followed by heavily armored officers. Kersson can be heard commenting on the growing presence of law enforcement as officers issue stern commands to residents, ordering them to go inside. Moments later, the officers begin firing paintballs at those still outside, as one of them commands, “Light ’em up!”

The curfew, which Walz imposed at 8 p.m. in an effort to control the riots that erupted after Floyd’s death, was part of a broader strategy to curb nighttime violence and destruction. In a statement following the imposition of the curfew, Walz reported over 400 arrests, including more than 250 for curfew violations.

The video has sparked outrage online, with many users condemning the police’s tactics and accusing Walz of overreach. Critics have labeled the actions as indicative of a police state, expressing disbelief that peaceful residents were targeted while rioters faced little to no consequences. Comments on social media range from accusations of dictatorship to fears of authoritarianism, reflecting a deep frustration with the perceived misuse of power.

As the video continues to circulate, the controversy surrounding Walz’s curfew enforcement raises questions about the balance between public safety and civil liberties during times of crisis.
