US Soccer Icon Alex Morgan Bids Emotional Farewell in Final Career Appearance
US soccer legend Alex Morgan brought her illustrious career to a poignant close on Sunday, making her final appearance in the San Diego Wave’s 4-1 defeat against the North Carolina Courage.
The 35-year-old Morgan, who announced her retirement last week, was substituted in the 13th minute of the match—significant for being the number she wore throughout much of her career. The move was met with a heartfelt standing ovation from the crowd at Snapdragon Stadium in Southern California.
In a deeply emotional moment, Morgan removed her cleats on the field and walked off in tears. After the final whistle, she returned to the pitch to address the fans who had stayed to honor her career.
“I want to thank my teammates, who have constantly challenged me every day and made me better. I want to thank my family who have relentlessly supported me and sacrificed so much,” Morgan said during her farewell speech. “There have been so many incredible moments in my career, but this last moment I share on the field with you, I will cherish forever. So thank you, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.”
Earlier in the match, Morgan had a chance to make a memorable exit with a penalty kick in the 10th minute, but it was saved by the opposing goalkeeper.
Morgan’s retirement announcement, which came last week via an emotional social media video, also revealed that she is expecting her second child. Her daughter Charlie joined her on the field for her final bow, presenting her with a bouquet of flowers after the game.
Morgan leaves behind a remarkable legacy, including two World Cup titles with the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) and an Olympic gold medal in 2012. She also retires as the fifth-highest scorer in USWNT history, with 123 goals to her name.
