"Uruguayan Soccer Player Juan Izquierdo Dies at 27 After Collapsing During Copa Libertadores Match"
Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo has tragically passed away at the age of 27 after collapsing on the pitch during a Copa Libertadores match. The defender suffered an irregular heartbeat while playing for Club Nacional against Sao Paulo at Estadio do Morumbi on August 22.
Club Nacional announced his death with heavy hearts on social media, stating, “It is with deepest pain and shock in our hearts that Club Nacional de Football announces the passing of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo. We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew him. Nacional is mourning this irreplaceable loss.”
Izquierdo, who had been substituted in at halftime, collapsed in the latter stages of the game. Medical staff attended to him promptly on the pitch, and he was transported to Albert Einstein Hospital. Despite receiving intensive care, including neurological treatment, he could not be saved.
In honor of Izquierdo, all Uruguayan Premier Division matches for the weekend were postponed. Uruguay national team captain Luis Suarez expressed his grief, writing, “Pain, sadness—it’s hard to explain. May he rest in peace. Sending strength to his family and friends.”
Izquierdo began his career with Uruguayan club Cerro in Montevideo, later playing for Penarol, Montevideo Wanderers, Atletico San Luis, and Liverpool, where he won the 2023 Uruguayan Premier Division. He rejoined Nacional in January 2024.
CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez also paid tribute, saying, “South American football is in mourning. My condolences to Club Nacional de Uruguay and all his loved ones.”
Nacional’s tribute read, “Juan Manuel was a dedicated athlete, cherished by his teammates and everyone at the club. You will always be remembered, dear Juan.”
