Typhoon Yagi Weakens After Devastating Northern Vietnam

Typhoon Yagi, one of the strongest storms of 2024, has downgraded to a tropical depression after wreaking havoc across northern Vietnam. The typhoon made landfall in Quang Ninh on Saturday, bringing winds up to 127 mph and heavy rains that caused severe flooding, landslides, and damage to homes. The storm resulted in at least 21 deaths and over 200 injuries in Vietnam, with significant damage reported in the capital, Hanoi, and other affected regions.

Yagi had previously struck the Philippines, killing 20, and southern China, where it claimed four additional lives and prompted the evacuation of about one million people. The storm’s impact in Vietnam included landslides that resulted in fatalities in the mountainous province of Lao Cai and Hoa Binh Province.

With Yagi now expected to dissipate, the aftermath includes extensive flooding, power outages, and damage to infrastructure, including thousands of downed trees and ruined crops.
