“I’ve been in computer science a long time. This is the first thing we don’t understand,” said Daryl Morey, the Philadelphia 76ers general manager, during his appearance at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference.

“That’s mind-boggling,” Morey stated. “We’ve actually now created something, with zeros and ones, where every step we’ve made the creation, but we don’t understand the results.”

“I think about that when I think about generative AI,” said Lopes. “I don’t think anyone quite knows what that is yet. That’s fascinating to me, and what’s going to be the next thing.”

Bringing the perspective of professional athletes, Carlos Peña, former baseball player and current broadcaster, highlighted AI’s capability to enhance athletic performance by helping batters recognize and respond to their weak points. However, Peña noted, for athletes to embrace AI, it must be presented not as abstract mathematics but as actionable insights.

Christopher Jackson, leading the digital data and analytics for the Olympics, emphasized AI’s ability to produce content for fans of lesser-known sports, overcoming the traditional media’s limited focus. But he also indicated the difficulty in syncing the Olympic’s long-term planning with the rapid, half-yearly advancements in AI technology.

From saving the NFL $2 million annually in scheduling to utilizing AI for injury prevention, Julie Souza, the global head of Amazon Web Services, highlighted AI’s growing footprint in football and beyond, influencing safety measures across different sectors.

Morey admitted that while AI is already boosting productivity in the 76ers’ front office, its full potential in predictive modeling is yet to be harnessed. “We haven’t found a ton there, but that will change,” he affirmed. Despite the potential risks and uncertainty, Morey advocates leaning into AI to remain competitive and innovative.
