The culinary world is mourning the loss of Dave Myers, widely recognized as one half of the beloved “Hairy Bikers” chef duo from British television, who has died at the age of 66 after a valiant battle with cancer, according to his on-screen partner and dear friend Si King. The announcement was made on Thursday.
Myers and King became household names in the U.K. and internationally with their unique “Hairy Bikers” TV series that blended their love for motorbikes, their charismatic banter, and their passion for cooking. Over the years, they have authored and released over 25 cookbooks to great acclaim.
In 2022, Myers shared with his fans the news that he was undergoing cancer treatment, though he did not go into the specifics of his condition.
King took to social media to express his grief, revealing that Myers passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday.
“Trying to describe my feelings right now is incredibly hard. The best friend I’ve had for so many years is on a path I cannot yet take,” King conveyed. “I will feel the absence of our bond and friendship every day, it’s been a part of me for more than half of my life. Godspeed my friend; you will always be a shining light in this world,” King wrote.
Before their culinary adventures, Myers had a career as a makeup artist specializing in prosthetics. It was in these early days, back in 1995 on a BBC television drama set, that he met King.
Their first show together, “The Hairy Bikers’ Cookbook,” aired on the BBC in 2004. Audiences fell in love with their dynamic as they explored various countries, delving into the culinary culture, from the back roads of Portugal to the deserts of Namibia, and cooking up the local fare themselves.
Their globe-trotting didn’t stop there; they ventured to the corners of the world, from Vietnam to Argentina, and even traversed Route 66 in the U.S. Moreover, they were transparent about their personal health journeys in “Hairy Dieters: How To Love Food And Lose Weight,” providing guidance and recipes to their fans through their diet club.
Even as he faced his illness, Myers courageously continued to work, with “The Hairy Bikers Go North” being his final collaboration with King. The series, which is currently on air, sees the pair exploring Britain’s western coastline from Scotland all the way down to Devon.
Myers is survived by his wife, Liliana Orzac, and was a loving stepfather to her children, Iza and Sergiu.
In remembrance of Dave Myers, fans and loved ones from around the globe cherish the joy and humor he brought into their homes. His legacy lives on through the countless recipes and hours of entertainment he created alongside his close companion, Si King. The culinary world reflects on his passing with heavy hearts but also celebrates the rich and adventurous life Dave Myers led. He is remembered not only as a talented chef but also as a beacon of joy and friendship to all who knew him.
