Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the number of robotaxis in Austin, Texas, will roughly double in December. This expansion comes six months after the launch of Tesla’s self-driving ride service in the city in June. Musk shared the update on X, the social media platform he owns.
While Tesla has not disclosed the exact number of robotaxis currently operating in Austin, the company continues to scale its autonomous ride-hailing service in select U.S. cities.
Tesla’s Current Robotaxi Operations
At present, Tesla’s robotaxi service is available in Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area. Despite being labeled “self-driving,” the vehicles still require safety monitors on board to supervise operations.
Last week, Tesla also secured a permit to operate a ride-hailing service in Arizona, signaling the company’s intention to expand its autonomous services beyond Texas and California.
Elon Musk’s Vision for Robotaxis
Musk has previously shared ambitious projections for Tesla robotaxis. In October, he indicated that parts of Austin could soon see robotaxis operating without safety drivers. Additionally, he expects Tesla robotaxis to be available in eight to ten major metropolitan areas by the end of the year.
Back in July, Musk suggested that Tesla robotaxis could potentially serve about half the U.S. population by year-end, emphasizing the company’s long-term vision to revolutionize urban mobility.
Industry Context and Competition
The robotaxi sector has faced numerous challenges over the years, including high costs, strict regulations, and federal investigations. Despite these hurdles, the industry is experiencing a resurgence. Tesla is leading the charge alongside Alphabet’s Waymo and Amazon’s Zoox, all accelerating their expansion plans.
