Acclaimed actor Stellan Skarsgard has recently opened up about his experience in the hit musical Mamma Mia!

Currently in the spotlight for his role in Dune: Part Two, the 72-year-old actor reminisces about one of his more whimsical roles, playing Bill opposite an all-star cast in 2008’s Mamma Mia! This cast includes the likes of Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, and Colin Firth.

Stellan not only took on the role once but also reprised it in the 2018 sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

In a candid interview, Stellan shared his thoughts on the lighthearted nature of his character in Mamma Mia.

Read on to see his reflections on the role…

“It was absurd to ask me to be in a musical,” he confessed in an interview with Vanity Fair. “I can’t sing, I can’t dance. And seeing that Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, who also can’t sing and dance, were part of the project made me less nervous.”

He then elaborated on the role that he and his male co-stars played in the film.

“We were cast as the ornamental figures, similar to the ‘bimbo’ stereotype often seen in male-dominated films,” he explained. “Our task was simple: look attractive and act foolishly. There was only one true requirement for us — ‘Have fun.’ The success of the movie hinged on our ability to do that.”
