"Steelers' Justin Fields Sets Franchise Record Despite Week 4 Loss to Colts"
In a twist of irony, Justin Fields’ first loss as the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers coincided with a record-setting performance. In the Colts’ 27-24 victory over the Steelers, Fields became the first player in franchise history to achieve 300 passing yards, 50 rushing yards, and two rushing touchdowns, according to ESPN.
Fields finished the game with 312 passing yards, completing 22 of 34 passes, alongside 55 rushing yards on 10 carries, which included two touchdown runs. The record had previously been held by Kordell Stewart, who in 1997 threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 49 yards and two scores.
Although Fields’ historic day showcased the potential of the Steelers’ offense, it wasn’t enough to secure a win. After trailing 17-3 at halftime, Fields and the team rallied to score touchdowns on three consecutive drives in the second half. However, the Colts, led by Joe Flacco—who stepped in for the injured Anthony Richardson—managed to maintain their lead.
Key turnovers proved costly for the Steelers, including fumbles by Fields and George Pickens, which overshadowed many positive plays from the offense. The defense also struggled, failing to contain the run and generate pressure on Flacco, missing a crucial interception opportunity in the second quarter.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged Fields’ effort, stating, “I appreciate his fight, but he and we were a little bit sloppy at times—too sloppy to comfortably secure victory.”
