Saquon Barkley’s Late Drop Costs Eagles in 22-21 Loss to Atlanta Falcons
In a dramatic turn of events, Saquon Barkley’s critical drop late in the fourth quarter proved costly for the Philadelphia Eagles as they fell 22-21 to the Atlanta Falcons in their home opener on Monday night.
With just 1:46 left in the game and the Eagles leading 18-15, Barkley had a golden opportunity to secure the victory. Positioned at the Atlanta 10-yard line, Barkley bobbled a short pass from quarterback Jalen Hurts on third down. The missed catch halted the clock and forced Philadelphia to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Jake Elliott, rather than going for a potential game-clinching touchdown.
Barkley, visibly dejected, took responsibility for the pivotal play postgame. “I dropped the ball,” Barkley admitted. “Let my team down today. Shouldn’t have put the defense in that position. If I make the catch, game’s over.”
Despite the setback, Hurts expressed his unwavering support for Barkley. “He’s going to trust me every time in that situation,” Barkley relayed Hurts’ message. Coach Nick Sirianni echoed the sentiment, stating the decision to kick the field goal was to put pressure on the Falcons and test their ability to drive the field. The strategy ultimately backfired.
The Falcons seized the opportunity with a flawless drive, culminating in a touchdown pass from Kirk Cousins to Drake London, who beat cornerback Darius Slay. The touchdown handed Atlanta a 22-21 lead. The Eagles had a chance for a comeback, but Hurts’ pass was intercepted by Jessie Bates III, ending any hopes of Philadelphia reclaiming the lead.
Slay, who was beaten by London for the game-winning score, took to social media to apologize to fans. “That’s on me Philly!! I owe yall one. DAMN!!!!!” he wrote.
The loss drops the Eagles to 1-1 for the season, with upcoming games against undefeated New Orleans and Tampa Bay. The team, which had a promising 10-1 start last year, now faces questions about their defensive and offensive consistency.
Barkley, in his home debut, rushed for 95 yards, following a strong performance the previous week where he had 109 yards and three touchdowns against Green Bay. Despite a promising start, the Eagles’ offense struggled to maintain momentum, especially with star receiver A.J. Brown sidelined due to a hamstring injury.
Defensive issues also contributed to the defeat. The Eagles’ defense, under new coordinator Vic Fangio, allowed Atlanta’s Cousins to exploit long drives and accumulate three field goals. Cousins eventually connected with Darnell Mooney for a 41-yard touchdown pass that put Atlanta ahead.
“We can be beat, especially if we don’t take advantage of our opportunities,” remarked Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham.
With Brown’s status uncertain, the Eagles will need to regroup quickly to address their recent shortcomings and prepare for the challenging games ahead.
