San Francisco 49ers Elevate Sorensen to Defensive Coordinator, Recruit Staley as Assistant – Sky Bulletin

In a strategic move aimed at strengthening their coaching structure, the San Francisco 49ers have elevated their own Nick Sorensen to the position of defensive coordinator while also bringing on board ex-Los Angeles Chargers coach Brandon Staley to join the team staff, based on information obtained by The Associated Press from a source privy to these decisions.

This insider revealed the new appointments under the condition of anonymity on Saturday since the 49ers have yet to formally announce the changes. Meanwhile, ESPN was the first to break the news of these developments.

The search for a new defensive coordinator commenced after the 49ers released Steve Wilks from the role just three days following their Super Bowl defeat at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Last season, the 49ers’ defense boasted an impressive placement, finishing third in points allowed. With Wilks at the helm, the team also performed well in advanced efficiency rankings, such as Expected Points Added and Defense-adjusted Value Over Average. Despite these achievements, Wilks fell short in adapting to head coach Kyle Shanahan’s preferred systems, and persistent issues, particularly in run defense and playoff performance, led to the decision to part ways.

San Francisco’s move to fire a coordinator immediately post-Super Bowl loss marks a rarity since the Atlanta Falcons’ decision after Super Bowl 51 when the Falcons saw defensive coordinator Richard Smith leave in the wake of a devastating loss to New England. At that time, Shanahan served as offensive coordinator for the Falcons and subsequently took the reins in San Francisco.

Following numerous candidate evaluations, which included both Sorensen and Staley, Shanahan reached his final verdict. Sorensen, who joined the 49ers initially as a defensive assistant in 2022, took a lead role with linebackers during Johnny Holland’s cancer treatment and subsequently managed the passing defense and nickel backs last season.

During his tenure with the 49ers, Sorensen also made a mark with his weekly meetings aimed at driving turnover creation. Before his term in San Francisco, he coached special teams in Jacksonville in 2021 and served for eight seasons on Seattle’s staff focusing on secondary and special teams. As a former defensive back with a decade-long NFL playing career initiated after two seasons as quarterback at Virginia Tech, Sorensen holds a wealth of experience.

On the other hand, Staley, post his dismissal from the Chargers with an evenly split head coaching record, brings to the table his one-year stint as coordinator of the top-ranked Los Angeles Rams defense in 2020. His background in Vic Fangio’s defensive schemes presents a variation to the system previously adopted by the 49ers under Ryans and Robert Saleh, which Shanahan is interested in preserving while infusing some fresh elements.
