Following the campaign trail, Nikki Haley has emerged victorious in the District of Columbia’s Republican primary, securing her first win in the 2024 election race.
This triumph on Sunday interrupts the winning streak of Donald Trump in the Republican primaries, although Trump is anticipated to gain a substantial number of delegates in the upcoming Super Tuesday events.
Haley continues to steadfastly remain in the contest despite earlier defeats and has chosen not to identify any particular primary she expects to win confidently. After a setback in South Carolina, her home state, Haley insists that the subsequent primary states deserve a choice other than Trump, citing his campaign’s prevailing influence.
The Associated Press confirmed Haley’s win on Sunday night upon the report of the results by D.C. Republican Party officials. Her win ensures her all 19 delegates at stake.
With its predominant Democratic alignment and approximately 23,000 registered Republicans, Washington is one of the nation’s most liberal areas, having awarded Joe Biden with 92% of the vote in the 2020 general election.
Trump sarcastically commented on Haley’s victory, playfully dubbing her as the “Queen of the Swamp,” a nod to the lobbyists and D.C. insiders desiring to maintain the status quo.
Haley energetically rallied in Washington, D.C. on Friday before returning to North Carolina and other states part of the Super Tuesday primaries. Addressing a group of over 100 supporters, she humorously stated, “Who says there’s no Republicans in D.C., come on.”
“We’re trying to make sure that we touch every hand that we can and speak to every person,” Haley added during her gathering.
While she delivered her typical campaign pitch, criticizing Trump’s management of the federal deficit, one attendee voiced out, “He cannot win a general election. It’s madness.” Haley concurred, asserting her belief that she could prevent Biden from being re-elected, unlike Trump.
Identifying as a strict conservative, Haley has shown appeal to moderate and even independent-leaning electorates.
An AP VoteCast survey showed that 40% of Haley supporters in South Carolina’s GOP primary were categorized as moderates, versus 15% for Trump, revealing a contrast in their support bases.
Previously, Trump scored an uncontested win in D.C.’s 2020 primary, but in 2016, he was behind both Senator Marco Rubio and Governor John Kasich. Notably, other centrist Republicans like Mitt Romney and John McCain have also won the city’s primaries in their respective nomination pursuits.
