Michelle Obama’s DNC Speech Sparks Backlash Over Hypocrisy Claims Amid Lavish Lifestyle
Michelle Obama faced significant backlash following her recent speech at the Democratic National Convention (DNC), where she urged Americans to avoid “taking more than they need.” Critics accused the former First Lady of hypocrisy, pointing to her considerable wealth and multiple luxury properties.
During her speech, Obama reflected on her parents’ values, stating they “didn’t aspire to be wealthy” and were cautious of those who accumulated excessive riches. She emphasized the importance of community and selflessness, highlighting her mother’s volunteer work at a local school.
However, her comments sparked outrage on social media. Critics questioned the alignment between her message and her personal wealth, estimated at over $70 million. They pointed to her family’s extensive property portfolio, including a mansion in Martha’s Vineyard and other high-value homes in Washington, Hawaii, and Chicago.
“Michelle Obama lost me when she said ‘my parents taught me not to trust wealthy people’ and she’s worth $70 million. This election is comedy,” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Another remarked, “The 70 MILLION DOLLAR Martha’s Vineyard Socialist, Michelle Obama. Oh, how times have changed.”
The criticism extended to other DNC speakers, including Jack Schlossberg and Governor JB Pritzker, who also have substantial inherited wealth. The critique highlighted a perceived disconnect between the Democratic Party’s messaging and the personal finances of its prominent figures.
In addition to the controversy over her wealth, Obama used her DNC platform to fiercely criticize GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, labeling him “misogynistic, racist, and petty.” She expressed strong support for Kamala Harris, calling her “my girl,” and urged unity within the Democratic Party.
The evening’s events also included remarks from Barack Obama, who seemed to mock Trump’s preoccupation with size in a light-hearted gesture.
