Liam Lawson to Replace Daniel Ricciardo at Red Bull for Remainder of 2024 Season
Daniel Ricciardo has been replaced by Liam Lawson at Red Bull Racing for the remainder of the 2024 Formula 1 season. The decision follows concerns from Red Bull management regarding Ricciardo’s recent performances, with six races left to go.
Team principal Laurent Mekies praised Ricciardo for his experience, talent, and positive attitude, stating, “Daniel has been a true gentleman both on and off the track… He will be missed.” Lawson, 22, previously stepped in for Ricciardo after his injury in 2023 and finished ninth at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Ricciardo’s career, once on a high with seven wins at Red Bull, has faced challenges since he left the team in 2018. After struggling at Renault and McLaren, he returned to Red Bull as a reserve driver before rejoining as a race driver. However, his performances have not met expectations, leading to this decision.
Lawson’s promotion gives him a crucial opportunity to prove himself as a potential long-term driver for Red Bull, particularly as Sergio Perez’s seat remains under scrutiny. With the F1 season on a four-week break, Lawson’s debut will come at the US Grand Prix in Austin from October 18-20.
