In a reflective decision, wrestling icon Sting has announced his plans to retire, despite AEW President Tony Khan’s wishes for him to extend his career.

In a poignant discussion with Collette Arrand for PWI, published in the May 2024 issue of Pro Wrestling Illustrated magazine, Sting divulged the reasons behind his impending departure from the squared circle.
“I was the unlikely candidate for professional wrestling, unfamiliar with it upon starting. Yet, it became my lived profession. Despite being an introvert, I thrived entertaining crowds but maintaining performance levels at my age is daunting,” shared Sting. “It can be overwhelming; thus, it’s time to step away despite thousands of appearances and unwavering nerves each time.”
Reflecting on His Retirement: Sting Opens Up
Sting acknowledged that Khan had proposed a longer stint, potentially culminating at AEW All In. Despite the allure, the wrestling stalwart recognized his limits. “Tony (Khan) wanted me to push on, perhaps bid farewell at Wembley. Yet, there’s a threshold. You’re sharing the stage with the next generation, and it’s challenging,” Sting admitted. “Naturally, there’s sadness entwined with relief. It’s a mixed-emotion exit, but one I’m ready for.”
