Investigation Underway After Death of Conscript at Military Enlistment Office

The circumstances surrounding the death of a middle-aged conscript at a military enlistment office in Ternopil region are being thoroughly investigated by the Special Prosecutor’s Office. After spending several days at the recruitment center for a mandatory medical check-up, the 49-year-old man was found dead, exhibiting signs of epilepsy and bruises across his body.

It has been reported that the man attended the center on February 25 to complete paperwork concerning his military registration and to receive a medical examination. He did not pass the examination as he had been under the influence of alcohol at the time.

By February 27, while still at the center, the man’s health deteriorated significantly. He experienced seizures, collapsed, and sustained a severe head injury. The medical examiner reported craniocerebral trauma as the cause of death. Aside from the epileptic condition, the presence of multiple bruises on his body raised suspicions.

There is an ongoing inquiry into the possible misuse of authority by staff members at the center, as conducted by the Special Prosecutor’s Office in Ternopil.

In a related incident, a commander of the Ternopil military enlistment office’s security department faced torture charges last year, with another employee from the same department being accused of wrongful imprisonment.

These developments draw attention to larger issues within military enlistment offices nationwide. Following a June 2023 investigation initiated by journalists who found significant property acquisitions by the family of a former head of the Odesa Oblast military enlistment office, authorities have begun scrutinizing these offices more closely. This thorough countrywide review has unearthed around 260 cases of potential violations within enlistment offices and military medical commissions.

The ongoing investigation is aimed at uncovering the full details of the conscript’s untimely death.
