Impending Snowstorms to Continue in California-Nevada Region – Sky Bulletin

As the formidable blizzard in the Sierra Nevada subsides on Sunday, residents and visitors should remain prepared for additional snowfall forecasted for the area.

The weather is temporarily easing with diminishing winds on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. However, another round of snow is expected to blanket the region shortly thereafter, with certain areas also experiencing rainfall. This brief respite follows what has been described as an exceptionally severe multi-day snowstorm that resulted in the closure of an essential California interstate, suspended operations at ski resorts, and led to widespread power outages.

As of Sunday morning, Pacific Gas & Electric’s reports indicated that power had been restored to the majority of its customers in California, leaving about 7,000 still without electricity. NV Energy had similarly reinstated power to most of its customer base, leaving roughly 1,000 homes and businesses without power. Ski areas in the locality, including Sierra at Tahoe, forewarned further challenges due to weather conditions but planned to resume partial operations following delays.

Palisades Tahoe, renowned for hosting the 1960 Winter Olympics and being the largest resort at the north end of Lake Tahoe, was forced to suspend all chairlift operations on Saturday amid heavy snowfall, high winds, and poor visibility. It aims to reopen by Sunday morning after approximately 5 feet (1.5 meters) of snow accumulated on its upper mountain by Saturday night, causing resort officials to anticipate extensive excavation work for the time ahead.

The National Weather Service has anticipated more than 10 feet (three meters) of snow at the higher elevations surrounding Lake Tahoe. Meteorologist William Churchill has highlighted the severity of the situation, referring to it as an “extreme blizzard” for the region. While record snowfall levels are not expected, Churchill emphasizes the intense conditions: high snow volumes coupled with fierce winds.

Starting Thursday, the storm system had placed a 300-mile (480-kilometer) portion of the mountains under a blizzard warning. In the coming week, the National Weather Service in Sacramento foresees another, albeit less intense, storm that will likely deposit an additional 1 to 2 feet of snow in the same region.

Despite challenging conditions, businesses like Alibi Ale Works brewpub and restaurant managed to stay operational on Saturday. Bartender Thomas Petkanas described the grueling weather conditions, with about 3 feet (1 meter) of snow already on the ground by midday. Customers arrived shaking off the accumulating snow, and about half of the town was reported to be without power.

Interstate 80, a significant transportation artery between Reno and Sacramento, had to be closed by California authorities due to poor conditions caused by the storm, such as spinouts and reduced visibility.
