Iga Świątek Draws Inspiration from ‘Ted Lasso’ Positivity During US Open Success
Polish tennis sensation Iga Świątek, fresh off her impressive victory over Liudmila Samsonova to secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the US Open, has revealed that she draws inspiration from the popular Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso. The top-ranked player has embraced the show’s message of “positivity” as a guiding principle both on and off the court.
In a recent interview, Świątek, who is a well-known fan of the Emmy-winning comedy, spoke about how Ted Lasso‘s emphasis on optimism and team spirit influences her approach to tennis. “It’s a totally different sport because [in Ted Lasso] it’s all about team spirit,” Świątek explained. “Here a little bit as well with my team, but obviously we’re alone on the court.” Despite being alone on the court, she finds the show’s ethos of positive thinking and resilience motivating.
The presence of Ted Lasso creator and star Jason Sudeikis at her match added an extra layer of excitement. Świątek admitted she tried to stay focused and avoid distractions, including the temptation to look at the screens showing Sudeikis. “I actually tried to avoid looking at the screens, but I saw him tonight,” Świątek said with a chuckle. “I wanted to stay focused and I hope he appreciates my mentality because this is what Ted Lasso is all about. I hope he enjoys, though, and he’s not working right now on a new [season] or something.”
Following her win, Świątek took to social media to share her excitement, posting a simple yet joyful message, “QF @usopen,” along with a gif of Ted Lasso’s iconic yellow “Believe” poster. The post captured her appreciation for the positive influence the show has had on her mindset.
While Świątek enjoys her success, Sudeikis might soon be back to work. Ted Lasso has seen significant developments recently, with Season 4 reportedly moving forward. Deadline exclusively reported last month that the show’s studio, Warner Bros. Television, has picked up options for cast members Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Jeremy Swift, hinting at the return of the beloved series.
As Świątek continues her run at the US Open, her adherence to the Ted Lasso philosophy of positivity serves as both a personal mantra and a public testament to the show’s inspirational impact. The Polish tennis star’s journey through the tournament, guided by the optimism of her favorite show, adds a unique layer to her ongoing success.
