FIFA Suspends Argentina's Emiliano Martinez for Two Matches Over Fair Play Violations
Argentina’s goalkeeper Emiliano “Dibu” Martinez has been handed a two-match suspension by FIFA’s disciplinary committee for violating fair play principles. He will miss Argentina’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Bolivia next month.
Martinez’s infractions occurred during the recent Copa America matches against Chile and Colombia. After Argentina’s victory over Chile, he infamously held a replica Copa America trophy to his groin, mimicking a controversial celebration from the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Additionally, he faced disciplinary action for pushing a camera operator’s equipment following Argentina’s 2-1 defeat to Colombia on September 10.
The Argentine Football Federation (AFA) defended Martinez but acknowledged the sanctions imposed by FIFA. In a statement, the AFA expressed its strong disagreement with the committee’s decision, emphasizing the player’s accountability for his actions.
Currently, La Albiceleste leads the Conmebol World Cup qualifying standings with 18 points from eight matches, holding a two-point edge over second-placed Colombia. The top six teams from Conmebol will qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup, while the seventh will enter a playoff for a chance to compete.
