ECI Announces Poll Dates for Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana: Triumph of Ballot Over Bullet
In a significant development for Indian politics, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the dates for the forthcoming Assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana. This announcement, made by the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) during a press conference on Friday, marks the beginning of a crucial electoral process for both states.
Jammu & Kashmir, with its 90 assembly seats, will go to the polls on 18 September 2024. This election will be particularly noteworthy as it will be the first Assembly election since the region’s reorganization in August 2019, which abrogated Article 370. The Chief Justice of India had previously directed the ECI to ensure the completion of these elections by 30 September 2024, underscoring the importance of restoring democratic processes in the region.
Haryana’s elections are scheduled for 1 October 2024. The state, which last held assembly elections in 2019, is bracing for a fresh round of political contests. Both states are expected to witness heated campaigns, with political parties intensifying their efforts to sway voters.
At the press conference, the CEC emphasized the Election Commission’s dedication to ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections. The Commission has promised robust security arrangements to safeguard voters, especially in sensitive areas. “All candidates get due security, what is intended is that participation should increase in terms of contesting candidates in terms of campaigning, and rallies,” the CEC stated.
The model code of conduct is now in effect across both states, enforcing strict guidelines for political parties and candidates. Additionally, the CEC assured that the menace of drugs would be tackled rigorously in both Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana. The counting of votes is set for 4 October, with results to be declared on the same day.
These elections represent a critical moment for both Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana, reflecting the ECI’s commitment to upholding democratic processes and ensuring a fair electoral environment.
