Detroit Lions Legend Joe Schmidt Passes Away at 92

Joe Schmidt, a revered linebacker for the Detroit Lions and a Pro Football Hall of Famer, has passed away at the age of 92, his family confirmed in a statement released by the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Schmidt died on September 11 while in hospice care.

Jim Porter, President of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, praised Schmidt’s career, saying, “Joe Schmidt played during a golden era for middle linebackers in the NFL. Many of his peers considered him one of the toughest opponents they ever faced. When Joe Schmidt arrived at the ball carrier, that was the end of the play. Despite his remarkable achievements, he never sought the spotlight; he let his play speak for itself.”

Drafted in the seventh round of the 1953 NFL Draft by the Lions from the University of Pittsburgh, Schmidt joined a team that was the reigning NFL champion. Despite a history of injuries, including broken ribs and a concussion during college, Schmidt never missed a game in his rookie season and played a key role in defending the Lions’ title.

Throughout his 13-year career with Detroit, Schmidt contributed to another NFL championship in 1957 and missed only 11 games. He was selected to the Pro Bowl for ten consecutive years from 1955 to 1964 before retiring in 1965 at the age of 33. Schmidt’s career totals include 24 interceptions, three defensive touchdowns, and 17 fumble recoveries over 155 games.

Following his retirement as a player, Schmidt returned to the Lions as a linebackers coach and later served as head coach from 1967 to 1972, achieving a record of 43-34-7. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1973 and is recognized as part of the NFL 100 All-Time Team.

Lions owner emeritus Martha Firestone Ford expressed her condolences, stating, “Joe Schmidt had the heart of a Lion, which made it fitting that he was also the heart of our team. He was an integral part of our championship seasons and continued to be a significant figure in our organization until his passing. Joe made Detroit his home and carried his success from the field into our community. I am deeply saddened by his loss and extend my heartfelt condolences to Marilyn and his children.”
