Cristiano Ronaldo Addresses Retirement Speculation: "I'll Leave When I Stop Contributing"
Cristiano Ronaldo has dismissed any immediate plans for retirement from international football, asserting that he still has much to offer Portugal. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, the 39-year-old forward emphasized that he would make the decision to retire when he feels he is no longer making a meaningful contribution to the team.
“When the time comes, I’ll move on,” Ronaldo stated, ahead of Thursday’s Nations League match against Croatia in Lisbon. “It won’t be a difficult decision to make.”
He pointed to his former teammate Pepe, who retired last August at the age of 41, as an example of how to exit the sport with dignity. Ronaldo stressed that he would follow a similar approach if he reaches a point where he believes he’s no longer adding value to the team.
Despite receiving criticism and failing to score in his record sixth European Championship appearance this year, Ronaldo affirmed that he has never considered leaving the national team. He also noted the support he continues to receive from Portugal’s coach, Roberto Martinez.
“The expectations on the national team were too high,” Ronaldo said. “Tough times in a footballer’s career help you grow.”
Following the match against Croatia, Portugal will remain in Lisbon to face Scotland on Sunday.
