Community Honors 11-year-old Victim at Emotional Rosary Service in Texas – Sky Bulletin

The small Texas town is grieving after the tragic loss of an 11-year-old girl, Audrii Cunningham, who was heartbreakingly killed, allegedly by a trusted family friend. St. Joseph Catholic Church held a rosary service on Saturday where residents and family members gathered to remember the young girl they described as “precious.”

During the service, Rev. Paul Kahan shared touching words about Audrii, calling her a “precious, gentle, kind, loving, smiling, animal lover.” He admitted to the over 100 attendees that there were no clear answers to the incomprehensible event that led to the child’s death but urged the community to honor her memory.

“Keep her memory alive by making sure that no family will ever go through what we are going through now,” implored Rev. Kahan. “The safety and the well-being of our children is our highest priority.”

Family friend Don McDougal is the alleged perpetrator, having been charged with capital murder. It was McDougal who had the responsibility of walking Audrii to her school bus stop on the morning of her disappearance on Feb. 15. Her body was tragically discovered in a river near Houston five days later.

McDougal’s criminal past, which includes a history of violence, and how he remained free despite this, has sparked outrage and questions among Audrii’s family and the community. Records show decades prior, he was accused of inappropriate behavior with another Texas child but managed to evade inclusion on the state sex offender registry due to a plea to a lesser charge.

Moreover, McDougal faced allegations of stabbing a man just last year but escaped arrest on aggravated assault due to insufficient evidence, as stated by authorities at that time.
