The championship-winning head coach of the Golden State Warriors, Steve Kerr, has solidified his future with the team by agreeing to a two-year extension valued at $35 million, shared sources close to the matter.

Two individuals with knowledge of the deal discussed its terms under the cover of anonymity due to the contract not yet being officially signed. ESPN was the first to report the agreement, noting that Kerr’s agency, Priority Sports, confirmed the negotiation. This new deal sets a benchmark for the annual value of a coach’s contract.

Following a victorious game against Charlotte, Kerr shied away from commenting on his new contract as it is not yet finalized, although he did express his positive feelings about his continued tenure with the Warriors.

Now in his 10th season, Steve Kerr was approaching the end of his current contract with the Warriors, which was due to run out after the current season. Kerr has been focused on the season without rushing contract talks, having always intended to remain with the team.

Kerr, 58, crossed the 500-win milestone as a coach and has led the Warriors to four NBA championships, working with a roster that includes names like Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson.

Draymond Green praised Kerr’s value to the franchise and was enthusiastic about the coach’s contract, stating that Kerr’s contributions to the team and their successes are irreplaceable.

Despite having no worries about coaching the Warriors without a future contract in place, Kerr has his sights on coaching the U.S. Basketball team in the upcoming Paris Olympics, though he does not intend to continue with the national team for the subsequent Olympics cycle.

The new contract would make Kerr the highest annually paid NBA coach at $17.5 million per year, surpassing other big contracts like those of Erik Spoelstra of Miami, Gregg Popovich of San Antonio, and Monty Williams of Detroit when considering total value.

Green further commented on Kerr being in the same league as coaching legends, playing a key role in the Warriors’ collective future.

Since guiding the team to the 2015 NBA title — their first in 40 years — Kerr has faced major health challenges, taking a leave of absence the following season due to complications from back surgeries. His assistants stepped up in his absence. Kerr also had health-related bench absences in 2017.

Kerr’s new contract salary exceeds his entire player-career earnings and secures his position with the Warriors through the 2025-26 season, aligning with Stephen Curry’s contract duration with the team.

Among his peers, Kerr boasts a high winning percentage and unparalleled postseason success, making him one of the top coaches in NBA history.
