Cleveland Soccer Group Acquires Land for $150 Million NWSL Stadium Bid

Cleveland Soccer Group (CSG) is making strides toward securing a National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team by acquiring nearly 14 acres of state-owned land for a new stadium. The $4.2 million deal, finalized with Cleveland Metroparks, aims to support CSG’s plan for a $150 million stadium project.

The stadium, which will have an initial capacity of 12,500 with potential expansion to 20,000, is strategically located across from Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Guardians. CSG has already gathered nearly 15,000 season ticket pledges, indicating strong local interest.

With the NWSL expanding to 14 teams this season and plans for a 16th team to be announced by the end of 2024, Cleveland is vying for a spot alongside cities like Cincinnati and Denver. CSG hopes the stadium, featuring amenities such as green spaces and public trails, will enhance its bid. The overall project is estimated to cost $238 million, with CSG seeking $90 million in public funding.

As the league looks for dedicated facilities for women’s sports, Cleveland’s proposal follows in the footsteps of the Kansas City Current, who recently opened a women’s-only stadium. This initiative could strengthen Cleveland’s chances for NWSL expansion, especially as the league continues to grow.
