Caitlin Clark Surpasses Lynette Woodard with a Remarkable 33-Point Performance – Sky Bulletin

In a breathtaking display of skill, University of Iowa guard Caitlin Clark has set a monumental record, claiming the title of highest scorer in major college women’s basketball history. During a commanding 108-60 victory over Minnesota, Clark poured in 33 points, overtaking Lynette Woodard’s record with a career total of 3,650 points.

Iowa’s head coach, Lisa Bluder, places significant value on this record, highlighting the disregard of the NCAA for women’s basketball achievements prior to 1982. Bluder emphasized that women’s basketball history should acknowledge the earlier period when the NCAA wasn’t involved, honoring those who played in that era. She advocates for the recognition of Woodard’s and others’ contributions to the sport.

Previously, Clark bested Kelsey Plum’s NCAA record of 3,527 points. However, Woodard’s 3,649 points were scored for Kansas between 1977-81 under the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women banner, which the NCAA has not fully acknowledged in its records due to its own women’s basketball program initiating in the 1981-82 season.

Clark’s record-breaking moment came with a 3-pointer early in the game and was part of an exceptional performance that included setting the NCAA single-season record for 3-pointers and achieving her 17th career triple-double.

With this achievement, Clark has Pete Maravich’s overall major college scoring record in her sights, and she also paid homage to Woodard’s legacy and the advancements in women’s sports.

Further noting women’s basketball icons, Pearl Moore of Francis Marion holds the AIAW record with an incredible 4,061 points. Alongside, Grace Beyer and other small-college players continue to set benchmarks in women’s basketball within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Clark, amidst all the attention on her scoring prowess, remains committed to team success, despite recent setbacks that saw Iowa miss out on the Big Ten regular-season title. Nonetheless, the Hawkeyes have stayed in the national spotlight, thanks in part to spirited performances in packed arenas like the one in Minnesota.
