Birds of Prey in South Africa Face Sharp Decline, Study Warns

Birds of prey in South Africa are facing big problems. The number of birds of prey is going down fast. This is according to a study that looked at data from the last 16 years. The study looked at information from road surveys over the country.

The person who collected the data is Ronelle Visagie. She is a conservation fieldworker. She drove 400,000 kilometres around South Africa. She worked with the Birds of Prey Programme of the Endangered Wildlife Trust. During her trips she wrote down every time she saw a bird of prey or a big bird. This created a lot of information about birds of prey in the area.

The study looked at 26 kinds of birds. This includes 18 birds of prey and 8 other big birds. The results showed that half of the birds are getting fewer in number. Three kinds of birds are getting more numerous. 42 Percent of the birds are decreasing by more than half. This is a problem for people who want to protect birds.

Some birds are doing really badly. These include birds that migrate like the kestrel Amur falcon and steppe buzzard. Birds that live in the area all the time like the secretarybird, jackal buzzard and Verreaux’s eagle are also decreasing in number. It is hard to protect birds that migrate because they face problems in different places.

The study found out why birds of prey are decreasing in Africa. Some reasons are that people are using land for farming using pesticides killing birds illegally and changing the climate. Birds are also hitting power lines and wind farms. All these things are bad for birds. Birds of prey are especially vulnerable because they do not have babies need a lot of space and are not very numerous.

Even though the news is bad some birds are doing well. The white-necked raven greater kestrel and backed vulture are getting more numerous. The white-backed vulture is doing well. This is a thing because it is in danger in some parts of Africa. People think that special conservation efforts may be helping these birds.

The scientists also looked at information from the Southern African Bird Atlas Project. They compared this information with the road survey data. Some birds were doing the same in both studies. Others were not. The scientists think that the atlas project is good for seeing where birds live. The road surveys are better for seeing how many birds there are.

People who care about the environment are worried. They think that as the human population in Africa grows it will be harder for birds to survive. People will need land, food and energy. This could hurt birds more if people do not start protecting them better.

The experts say that this study shows how important it is to watch birds and to act fast to protect them. If people do not do something soon some birds of prey may disappear forever. Birds of prey in South Africa need help now. The study is about birds of prey, in South Africa. What is happening to them. Birds of prey are very important. People need to protect them.
