Australian Field Hockey Player Tom Craig Suspended for 12 Months After Attempting to Buy Cocaine at Paris Olympics

Australian field hockey player Tom Craig has been suspended for 12 months by Hockey Australia after attempting to purchase cocaine at the Paris Olympics. The suspension, effective from September 9, includes a six-month active period and a further six months that are suspended, contingent on meeting behavioral and conduct requirements.

Hockey Australia’s statement outlined that Craig will be barred from participating in any Hockey Australia-sanctioned events, including the Hockey One League and FIH Pro League seasons. During his suspension, Craig must also complete mandatory training and education programs.

Despite the suspension, Craig remains eligible for selection for next year’s national team, with Hockey Australia emphasizing that the player’s welfare is a priority.

Craig was detained by French police last month for attempting to buy cocaine in central Paris. After appearing before a French judge, he was released with a criminal warning.

Following his release, Craig issued a public apology, acknowledging his mistake and taking full responsibility for his actions. He stated, “I’ve embarrassed you all, and I’m truly sorry,” underscoring that his actions do not reflect the values of his family, teammates, or the Australian Olympic team.

At 29 years old, Craig is a seasoned player with over 100 international caps and was part of the Australian team that won silver at the Tokyo Olympics. The Australian team was eliminated in the quarterfinals at the Paris Games.
