A'ja Wilson Shatters WNBA Single Season Scoring Record as Aces Defeat Fever

A’ja Wilson set a new WNBA single season scoring record during the Las Vegas Aces’ game against the Indiana Fever on Wednesday night. Just before halftime, Wilson surpassed the previous record of 939 points set by Jewell Loyd in 2023 by sinking a jumper from the free throw line with 26.4 seconds left in the second quarter.

Wilson finished the game with 27 points and 12 rebounds, leading the Aces to an 86-75 victory. The two-time league MVP, who entered the game averaging 27.3 points and 11.9 rebounds per game, credited her teammates for their support in helping her achieve this milestone.

“I don’t want to sound cliché, but I don’t get any of that without every single teammate along the way. I’m so grateful to play with selfless women,” Wilson said. “My teammates are the heartbeat. They keep me going. I don’t get any points without them passing me the basketball.”

Wilson needed only 35 games to break the record, compared to Loyd’s 38 games. Her previous high was 912 points in 40 games last season. With 956 points so far this season, Wilson could become the first player in league history to score 1,000 points in a single year.

Wilson, who missed the Aces’ previous game due to an ankle injury, expressed relief at achieving the record. “Feels great, ’cause now people will stop talking about it,” she said. “I felt like it was just lingering, lingering, lingering, so I’m glad that we got it done. It’s been a lot of fun.”

The Aces have four games remaining, including another matchup against the Fever on Friday night.
